I believe the best way to inspire long-term growth is through understanding one's own learning. I help students build metacognitive strategies that they can implement beyond our sessions. Ultimately, I hope for my students to set and acheive their own goals after we are no longer working together.
I have over a decade of experience tutoring and teaching a wide range of subjects from middle school to college. I specialize in STEM teaching and tutoring, and I love to design experiences that allow learners to build confidence and connect with concepts on a deeper, longer-term level. My experience includes 6 years of combined middle and high school STEM teaching - including building and teaching 8 different curriculum systems. I have also coached many other educators and served as an educational leader in a range of contexts.
In order to make myself a better educator and support the educational community as a whole, I have served as an educational leader in a few different capacities:
Mentor teaching in Teach for America's Bay Area program, training new teachers in preparation for their first full-time classroom teaching experiences
Coaching teachers through completion of their New Teacher induction programs as part of California State Educator requirements
Piloting and evaluating whole-district middle school science curriculum for Oakland Unified School District
My training and education has allowed me to build a unique combination of both skills in teaching practices as well as advanced science content knowledge. All of my science teaching education is focused on inquiry-based education and the Next Generation Science Standards.
Bachelor of Science in Environmental Sciences (Physical Sciences Concentration) from the University of California, Berkeley
Cal Teach Credential in Secondary Science Education from the University of California, Berkeley
Teacher Induction Program at the San Francisco Exploratorium
When I am not teaching or designing content, I spend as much time as possible rock climbing, trail running, riding my bike, or simply being in the mountains! Being outside is a foundational part of my life and helps me build the confidence and resilience to tackle my most important goals. I share these aspects of my life with students in an effort to encourage them to also develop intentionally as humans beyond the classroom. I feel that academic work is just a tool that serves us in the rest of our lives, so it is important to regularly ground ourselves in that purpose!
